National Black Sisters Conference: Empowering Voices of Faith

I first learned about the National Black Sisters’ Conference (NBSC) at the very beginning of my discernment journey. As a novice Sister, I attended the National Black Catholic Congress and met members of the NBSC for the first time. Until that moment, I barely knew such an organization even existed. It was both intimidating and inspiring to stand among so many Black Sisters who had already given their lives to God. I remember thinking,“These are the women I’ve been looking for.”
What moved me most was the NBSC’s call to affirm and confirm the vocation of brown-skinned religious women. Their presence told me that I wasn’t alone — that my “yes” to God was part of a long, beautiful story of faith and perseverance. From that first encounter, I was welcomed with open arms and promised the support I would need to grow in my vocation.
As I became more involved, I felt the desire to give back. I volunteered for the board, and to my delight, I was elected — twice! I now serve as the board secretary, where I listen deeply, record our conversations and help keep our collective voice organized and strong.
The NBSC continues to inspire me because it stands as a powerful witness to faith in action. The Sisters I serve alongside are living testaments to courage, service and joy. They have walked long roads, broken barriers and remained steadfast in love for the Church and our people. Their example calls me to bring my full self — my energy, my gifts and my faith — into everything I do.
Being part of the NBSC has taught me that ministry doesn’t always happen in a pulpit or classroom. Sometimes it’s in the quiet work of building relationships, supporting others and showing up with hope. Together we remind one another — and the wider Church — that Black Catholic Sisters continue to shine as witnesses of grace, unity and faith that endures.
